Any subject of study needs justification . . . [h]istorians do not perform heart transplants, improve highway design, or arrest criminals. In a society that quite correctly expects education to serve useful purposes, the functions of history can seem more difficult to define than those of engineering or medicine. History is in fact very useful, actually indispensable, but the products of historical study are less tangible, sometimes less immediate, than those that stem from some other disciplines. -- Peter N. Sterns
Considering the aforementioned quote regarding history, weigh in by providing your thoughts as to how you would define "history" and why you think we study history in schools.

In my opinion, we study history to learn and try to understand the choices the people back then made. We learn history to know why the events that happened happen. We also learn about the good and bad people that made mistakes and sometimes good choices. The most important reason as to why we study history is because without history there would be no present, and sadly no future. Finally, we learn history to become more clear on the reasons for why things happened, because sometimes somethings aren't as clear as we hope, which is why we need to learn history and should.

Also, though, if we didn't have history of what came before us, we might not even know that things existed before us. So, I think she makes a good point about saying that time would be different because the future wouldn't have a past (the way I put that is weird). 9/5/2017 07:56:29 pm
I am simply saying that there still would be a future, even though, as you said, it would be very different without knowledge of its past.

We study history so that we can view the mistakes that people in the past have made, learn from them, and either alter the method of action so that there is a different result or so to make sure it never happens again. Another reason we study history is so that we can take good ideas and inventions from the past and build up on it to make something even better. For example, we've used the invention of a mobile telephone to help us communicate with people who are in different countries. We study history to also honor people for all the good things they've done that changed the world. In order to understand how the world's current structure came to be, we also need to learn about the revolutionary things people have done, whether they're good or bad. The last reason why we study history is so that we can have a better understanding as to why history is so important, since it is not clear to many people.

I think we study history so we wont repeat the same mistakes we made in the past. Also so we can be educated on how the world used to be, so we can make improvements in the future. If we never studied history, how could we have possibly moved on in the world or gain previous knowledge of the good and bad events that happened? And to have a better understanding of our ancestors lifestyle and way of living. Lastly, we need to study history to open up our minds of how our society used to function and work, may it be the government or the economy.

I agree with Yoeslyn about how we study history so that we won't repeat the same mistakes we made in the past and most of what she said, but, I also think that where you say we need ti study history to open our minds of how our society used to function and work is kind of the same as having a better understanding of our ancestors lifestyle and way of living. If anything our ancestors would know most of what happened(unless someones ancestor passes away before you can ask). I think asking our ancestors how it was before would be a bit more accurate than a book or website we usually get these things to come from. Mostly because it happened to them, and they could have been told stories or facts by their parents/ancestors.

Personally, I think that history is the record of what has happened and is yet to be. I feel we should have history in school for many reasons. First off is that we don't repeat our mistakes. Or more simply put, we learn from our mistakes. Second, is so we can learn gratitude for how easy our life is.

I think that we study history for a couple of reasons: to remember and to learn. History is a way to remember the struggles, the triumphs, the killings, and the revivings. Without history, we would all just believe that the earth has just always been the most perfect sanctuary for every race, gender, and sexuality. We need to remember that the has never and will never be perfect because if not, we would just be wandering aimlessly on a wild goose chase trying to make the earth great "again". We have to remember that everybody has made mistakes so we could learn from them. Also so we don't act like people aren't suppose to make mistakes and everybody is suppose to be perfect.

I really like your answer Nia. Your response really stood out to me. The reason why I like it so much is because you said that history lets us remember all the things that have happened. Whether they were good or bad. Then you made a really great point on how if we didn't study history so seriously(I said that we study history seriously because if we didn't study it as a subject, stories could have been passed down generations and we still would have known something about the past, but not as much.)then we would think that life had always been the same. We would think that life has always been great (i'm not saying it's great for everyone, but there are many who enjoy life). We would never see any advances in our way of life since we wouldn't learn from our mistakes.

I really like your response Nia. I like how you show the different aspects for history. For example, when you stated that the world has never been perfect and we shouldn't have the impression that it was. Learning about our history proves that exact claim. I also like how you included that everyone makes mistakes. If we didn't know about that through our history classes we never have known how are ancestors and civilization had developed. Everyone makes mistakes and yes this world isn't and will never be perfect.

In my opinion, history is one of the most important subjects we study in school. The reason I think we study history in school is because learning events from the past is important for our future. If we learn mistakes people have made in the past, then we won"t make the same mistakes again in the future. Another reason we study history is because we need to take good ideas from history and use them in the present day. For example, when America was first formed we looked at the ancient Greeks and their form of government, and their democracy, and put our own spin on it to improve on it. All in all, we need to study history to remember the good and the bad of what has happened in the past, so that we can build on it in the future.

Theoretically, yes, we should learn from the mistakes of our predecessors, but in some cases this does not occur. Often our differences of opinion make things unclear what is a good example and what is not. Our stubbornness often results in a repeat of those events, and could happen over and over until it has been drilled into our minds that whatever it is needs to stop.

History, as stated, is incredibly important. Some people think that history is just about reading boring stories about things that don't matter. Despite what you may think, what happened in the past can be very beneficial for the present. As a society, we need to advance and grow, and the best way to do that is too learn from our experiences. We do this by breaking everything down to a science, and we can develop an idea of what causes good things to happen, and what causes bad ones. We may not be able to immediately see how history helps us, but it's obvious that it's something we need to know. America wasn't built on some people having good ideas, it was built on people who understood what other countries did, and did what they learned from that.

History, I think, can be very specific. It can also be very open. History can be looked at from many points, whether it is a single person's history, a group, or land, and it is just constantly changing, with new things being added every day. History, is a story, or just facts, of the past, no mater how far back. I think that there are two classes of history, the history that is recorded, and studied, and history of a person's past, with items that represent that. I think we study history so that we can understand it, to learn from past mistakes, and move on. It will allow us to take past information and use it to carry on into the future.

I believe that we study history to understand just how much of our society has changed, like the amount of technology we have now compared to many years ago. Understanding history allows us to take what technology was created in the past and turn it into something even greater. I think we also study history to fully understand how we are here today, and to get a sense of what our world could be like if things hadn't quite turned out the way they did in the past. Without history, we wouldn't fully understand what certain people back then did to create the world we are in now. Learning history makes us learn from our mistakes and create new things.

In my opinion, I think that the reason why we study history in schools is so that the people of this generation don't make the same mistakes that we made back then. I think that in school history is very important. I say this because i believe that history is an attempt to try and make the world a better place by teaching students the good and bad that happened. The goal is for students to try and learn and repeat the good of the past but defeat the bad that happened. So with that said we try to make new improvements everyday. Another reason why I think we study history is to give recognition to those who did good in our world. An example of this would be Martin Luther King jr. He fought for seeing the possibility of America where black people were treated as equal. That is an example of someone we honor today for the great history and great impact they have had in this world. Also of history wasn't taught in schools, students would never know what happened back then so I think that history is very important for these reasons

In my believes, we study history to either celebrate or frown upon a mark in time. We also study history to remember, for example, the people who died in the attacks of 9/11, or to remember the people who fought for our country. Another reason we study history, is for our own knowledge and to know and understand what our ancestors and the people before us went through in their lives. These are the reasons why we study history, and why it is important to study it.

In my opinion, we study history so that we can improve what we've done in the past. Not only the bad things but the good things as well. I also think that if we learn about the certain changes that has happened over the years. For example, people used to actually kill over territory. What's the point of it? Yeah there may be some newborn kids and kids that grow up and need new homes but why didn't they just negotiate about who gets what instead of invading other land. We don't see that now(that we know of) because there's a lot of land people share without killing. What I mean by this example is that over the past few centuries we've been developing more ideas of how we can solve problems. This is my opinion on why we study history, to learn and understand how new things can be done.

History to me, is like a true story about the past. It could be artifacts that tell a true story about an event. Sometimes I feel like the stories that are passed down in history are sort of clues to a bigger point. All events that happen are all included in history. Whether we were there or not. Again, all of these events are clues so we can figure out the bigger point. The bigger point to me is teaching why our society is the way it is right now. History is there to give the facts on why this is how we live right now.

In my own words, I think the definition of History can be either the study of past events and human affairs or simply a collection of information of things that happen in the past.

History is the record of what has passed. Some people say that history is the past, but I think that it is what we hold onto and remember about the past. History is the collection of all we have remembered, learned, heard, or inferred about the past.

This is smart. History can be interpreted so many ways, which is why it's so hard to tell what is truly right- or if it even matters what is right. Nice job.

In my mind, history is learning about the people before us. History is learning all about the past. The whats, whys, hows, and whens. A synonym for history is past. History is our ancestors’ life. History allows us to understand our ancestors more. Put simply, we learn about history so we don’t repeat it. We learn about the flaws of history, and what worked and what didn’t. History is studied because we should learn more about how our ancestors lived, in order to understand them more.

History is what came before the modern era. History is everything that ever was and will be for all the rest of time. Perhaps history starts really with what we know scientifically about what happened with the world around us. Most history, what we learn about, is info about the past that has been passed down from father to son or whatever. History is opinion and point of view, history is experience.

I like the way you said that history is a perspective because I agree. History is interpreted many ways by many people.

Good point Keanu , for example some people could think that slavery was a good thing for the American society.

True indeed, Jenelvis. Some would argue it was great for society -- specifically the southern economy. Many are beside themselves at the very thought of removing confederate monuments because of what they represent (see Charlottesville for the proof), which speaks volumes as to how many, contemporarily, support slavery as an institution -- and they do so without shame.... but that's a topic of discussion for another day.

I think that we study history to learn from it. By studying the past we see what mistakes past leaders have made and our leaders will know not to do the same thing. The past shows us how our society can look if lead one way or another because in the past any single country has been lead differently, due to the fact that leaders change. When leaders change a country can stay the same or can switch up or get a new attitude, learning from the past will show us which is best to do.

Why do we study history? It's not as if many of us will become historians someday, and if we do, we probably won't make much of a difference, right? Wrong. It's true, you probably won't ever be the one to save the day, or at least not in the way you would expect. Historians don't do that. They are more like the people who sit at the chair with a computer in front of them, telling the heroes what to do. Do you know the person who discovered King Tut's tomb off the top of your head? No, of course not. But do you know who King Tut is? Yes, you most likely do.

I really like your usage of metaphors and similes to engage. The best touch, though, was the personal story you gave which was a perfect example of what you were trying to explain.

I believe that history is the stories, facts, and opinions of the past. It is the way we can learn about each of our cultures and the way this world has learned to thrive. History is a (not always accurate) recalling of the moments that are either recent and/or are far into the past.

We study history because it makes us learn things that might have affected us now or will affect us and if it will affect us in a good or bad way and we will know based on what happened . It shows us and helps us understand how we are like this now . I also believe that when we learn history that helps us become better and build into what has happened so far and probably become more successful and will make us hopefully have a great future .

I agree thigh you Wilbur when you say " I also believe that when we learn history that helps us become better and build into what has happened so far and probably become more successful and will make us hopefully have a great future" i believe that too. It has made me build up into what has happened. What is happening now will be history for our future people and it will make this world better and make new people more and more better. I total believe with you Wilbur!

I believe history is a form of remembering. History are passed events that I believe have made the present. We study these events to learn why and how we are where we are today. I also believe history is a way to show ignorance and how not to make the same mistakes as our ancestors. There are millions of examples, but one that shows this claim perfectly is slavery. For this example, white men believed that they could own another human and sell them as if they were property. The humans in this case were Africans and African American. Actually, white men didn't even consider Africans and African Americans humans. In the United States this was legally. We were just so ignorant that we believed that just because they were different they can be treated as animals and put to work and labor. Africans and African Americans later got the justice they so truly deserved because Africans and African Americans are just as human as anyone else. Today we no longer enslave Africans and sell them as property, but we still haven't progressed. There is still some type of slavery in everywhere in the world. For example, in some countries girls, not women are married to older men. These girls are then raped and beaten. And that is not even the worst part this can later lead to human trafficking and the same patterns repeats. Every time girls and people in general are sold and raped, you are stripping them of any dignitiy and innocence they have left. They are stripped of any human attributes left. They might as well be robots. The same things that happens today, happened when Africans and African Americans were stripped of any human left in them and were sold as property. Us young people are taught history so when this world belongs to us, we can make sure none of these inhumane actions continue.

I believe that because we have had history classes we believe that we should use the events that have happened and learn from them. But I feel that people with power just have this drive to prove someone wrong and go a completely different direction, then looking at the facts and knowing what went wrong.

Do you think people that think like that are just ignorant to history or do they genuinely just don't care?

History is what occurred in the past and why many important any events happen the way they do. The judgement and choices of people in history made an impact on our societies now. Without history peace would be difficult to come by. We study history because it helps explain things. Some people use it as a way to teach about religion and about culture. We can learn from the mistakes people have made in the past, but we can also learn from their successes. In doing so we can use history to shape our future.

I believe that history is a way for people to learn about their ancestors. Normally it would be to learn about past experiences, or simply just for the fun of learning where they originated from. Some people think that for something to be history, it has to to occur a while back, and something 'important" has to happen in the specific period of time. That's not the case; something as simple as going to the store could be considered history.

Learning History is very important. I believe that everybody should learn about History, to know about past events. This is very important because in our past, we have made many mistakes, and if we don't learn about them to avoid them, we will make the same errors again. We also study history to learn about other places and our ancestors in the past, to understand the past in a better way and to answer some of our questions.

I believe that history is everything that has passed. Whether it be small or big, or good or bad. By the time you read this it would already be history. In general history is just the past. Many people use it as a synonym to legendary. Like "We will make history." In a way that is saying that we will be legends. Why we study history is completely different. We study history to find out more about our or others past. To know why we do things or where they originated from. We study history as a form to go back into the past. To see what others went through.

I think that we study history to learn about what our ancestors had to go through when they were younger or older.I also think we study history because if we are to same mistakes it could lead us to, well most likely the same thing that happed.

I think we study history to learn about out ancestors. We should learn about what they faced, what they accomplished, and why we have the stuff we have today because without them, we wouldn't have things like phones, clothes, pencils, etc. And we should learn from them. Not just from the mistakes but also from the successes too, so we can make them better.
