Objectives

The objectives of this course are for students to:
  • understand why and how we study American history, especially its politics, culture, economics, and Constitutional issues.
  • be able to know the difference between a primary and secondary source, and to be able to critically analyze a primary source.
  • write a succinct and intelligent paper which analyzes one or more primary documents within the context of a larger historical question.
  • understand the major political, social, economic, cultural and religious events that shaped American history after the Civil War.
  • understand “the struggle to make a nation out of our many communities.”
  • understand the struggle between personal freedom and the power of the federal government.
  • understand and appreciate the development of a unique American culture.
  • understand America’s expanding role in international affairs, its expanding foreign policy, and participation in World War I, World War II, Vietnam and the Cold War.
