Rethinking Product Advertising
Considering the ways in which the stereotypes types created before and after the Civil War have been perpetuated throughout the years to limit African American progress, choose one of the advertisements from the controlling images folder with the task of giving it a makeover.
1) Your job is to first analyze the advertisement and jot down everything that you see that is (or can be considered) offensive and why.
2) Next, you should sketch out an alternative way to advertise the same product in 2018 that is devoid of any stereotypes.
3) Thirdly, you are to use your notes and sketch to digitally create an advertisement that portrays African Americans in a positive light and is devoid of any and all of the stereotypes of old.
Once you are finished with your design, you are to write a description of your original product and all the ways that it is offensive. This should include a brief history of the stereotyped caricature and the intention behind its creation. In your description of your new product, you are to explain EVERY PART that you changed and provide explanation for why changing it was necessary. These assignments are due at the end of class on Friday, October 26 .
