According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, a dictator is a person who rules a country with total authority and often in a cruel or brutal way. For years, and even at the moment, these harsh leaders have ruled countries all over the world. In my opinion, the harshest and most ruthless dictator the world has had the misfortune of knowing is Adolf Hitler, leader of the Nazi party and known in history for being, bluntly, a murderer. Hitler was able to turn many against Jewish people, and it only escalated from there. Jews were either killed or sent to concentration camps, where many didn't survive long. Some died on the way to the camps while others were killed by the harsh labor they were forced to partake in while in the camps. Under the rule of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, Jews were tortured and killed to no end. Jews were gassed and burned to death. Jews were starved and frozen to death. Jews were worked to death. During this time which is known as the Holocaust, between five and six million Jews were killed. Millions of innocent people were discriminated against and tortured and killed due to their religion. But the really sad thing is that there are so many other dated or even current dictators out there who've done terrible things for the country they rule or are doing the same damage to their countries right now. Now, who do you guys think is the worst and most ruthless dictator, and why? There’s no need to worry about “repeats,” write about the dictator you think is the most harsh even if someone else has done so already. Each of you should respond to at least one other post. Also, remember to use proper blogging etiquette and be kindly and aware of others’ posts. Thanks for reading!

I agree Melita, Adolf Hitler was a very ruthless person and had no regrets on the harsh things he did towards the Jews. The Jews he kept in the camps were severely tortured to the extreme point. The Germans thought he was doing a good thing and agreeing with him, but he really was the most harshest dictator in Germany.

I agree, Hitler was the worst. Eventually Jews had to go to Palestine because they had no where else to go because of the Holocaust. Dictators kill innocent people (which isn't good, obviously) but not like this. He killed millions of innocent people and got others to turn their backs on Jews as well. No one had a problem with Jews until Hitler came around. Hitler wasn't only offending them for what they believed in, but he killed them for it. There's been religious persecution but this is so unbelievably bad that there are no words. Hitler also started WW2, so he spread these beliefs to other countries and got them to help discriminate Jews also.

I think the most harsh dictator is Mao Zedong. He was in control of China for five years. Through his harsh ways, he managed to cause 45 million deaths. 4-6 million people died from being sentenced to death and 20 million people died from starvation through Mao's ruthless way. He also had many enemies of the state executed. His Great Leap Forward were the his efforts to change China from an agrarian economy into a socialist society through rapid industrialization. This would cause the Great Chinese Famine. Mao Zedong passes Adolf Hitler by a landslide having only caused a mere 11 million people compared to Mao's 45 million.

I think that the most ruthless dictator currently is Kim Jong Un from North Korea. He is 29 years old and had no prior experience to leading a country or a military for that matter. Nevertheless, he is obsessed with missiles, nuclear weapons, and atomic bombs. He spends billions of dollars of those type of stuff while his people starve. Actually, about 84 percent of North Koreans are borderline poor and starving. That's ridiculous! However, Kim is nice and chubby and has a ton of fancy cars, horses, alcohol, a private theater... (can you think of anything else that's expensive to put on this list?) In 2012, Obama offered over 240,000 tons of food aid to North Korea if they would stop breaking the international law of testing missiles and nuclear weapons. A couple months after, before the food was shipped, North Korea launched a missile test. Therefore, Obama cancelled the food from being shipped and stated that North Korea was violating an international ban. Kim replied that it was to show their military strength and not give into peer pressure. He also sends tons of people to concentration camps for committing crimes like traveling to South Korea and coming back. LIKE REALLY KIM?! (He doesn't like the U.S, South Korea, or the Soviet Union btw) The concentration camps are just horrifying. The labor is excruciating and the food rations are so terrible (a few ears of corn in one camp) that the prisoners have to resort to eating other animal's feces. North Korea's closest ally is China, but even China is becoming wary of North Korea and would rather become close with South Korea. He has publicly executed lots of people like his high rank uncle (it is said that he was eaten alive by lots of hungry dogs) and three popular pop bands for making and selling acts of them performing sexual stuff. So that is why I consider Kim Jong Un of North Korea to be one of the most ruthless dictators.

I believe that Mao Zedong was the worst.During his first five years in office years 1949 through out 1953 he had killed more than 4 to 6 million people by sentencing them to death or by sending them to "reform through labor"camps. Zedong was a revolutionary, and a communist leader.Zedong had also established social programs while he was in office. For example the great leap forward. This was an effort made to industrialize China. He had asked everyone to contribute to industrialize China. This had lead to people making smelting pots in their backyard. In these smelting pots they would focus to produce steel which at the time had so little value. But to make this situation worse was that the steel sometimes was made by there own kitchen supplies. With no money coming in from the steel produced by their own properties which meant no money was distributed to families, which meant no money to survive. And with no money to survive starvation and death leaped into Chinese life.Only this program(Which i repeat is only one) caused 20 million people their lives due to a mans uneducated actions. Another uneducated action caused 7 million people at the time their lives. His policies and political shrives at the end caused China a loss of 78 million people.(Sorry if anythings spelled anything wrong, what-eve's)

I think one of the most powerful and most brutal dictator of all is Adolf Hitler. He played a very major and intense role during the times in Germany. Adolf Hitler brought the entire Nazis Party to a whole new level of plans of torture. Many Germans saw Adolf Hitler as a strong leader after his democratic role as the head of the government. The Nazi Party that he led was in charge of many things such as the press, the schools and religion. People who were a part of the Jews and Gypsies were highly disliked by the Germans and Adolf Hitler was mostly cruel towards the Jews. He made laws for Jews that they are to not to participate in any activity or work and they had their citizenship taken away. To make it even worse, Adolf Hitler has his troops take the Jews into concentration camps where they were punished severely, had no freedom, and were officially enemies. Hitler hated the Jews and did not care if any of them suffered. Adolf Hitler was a very cruel dictator and had nothing but absolute power over the Jews.

I also agree with Melita, to me, Hitler was the worst dictator. To me it is interesting reading about the Holocaust and what terrible things Hitler did to people who didn't do anything to deserve that kind of struggle and pain. Another reason why he was the worst dictator in my opinion was because he was kind of crazy. He did a lot of things that contradicted what he was promoting. Two facts that I found to support my opinion are, "Hitler's First Love was a Jewish girl lacking courage,he never spoke to her; There was a Jewish-Austrian doctor who didn't charge Hitler's family due to their economic hardship. Hitler had him protected and called him, " Noble Jew. "To me if Hitler really did hate the Jews he would have not been so cowardly when coming to face the fact that them too should be included in his horrible pain inflicting camps if he really meant that all the Jews should be punished, ( for no reason ).

I am going to try and mix things up. I think the worst dictator of all time is Pol Pot. Pol Pot ruled as a communist leader of Cambodia from 1975 until 1979. He wanted a perfectly equal country, being a communist and all, so he decided to move the wealthier, better educated city people into the toils of farm labor. Anyone that complained of their work were sent to detention centers where they were tortured, then killed. Everything was controlled by Pol Pot and his government. Religion and books, education were all restricted. Also jobs were determined by the government. In some cases, children were forced to serve in the military. Death toles amounted for more than 1.5 million people, more than 1/5 of the population (an amazing number considering the 4 years in control.) Probably the most terrible thing though was the number of survivors in the detention camp called S-21. Out of about 20,000 prisoners only around 7 lived. This story has a happy-ish ending, in 1979 when the Vietnamese army drove Pol Pot into hiding. Pol Pot died in 1998.

Even though other leaders gave put children in the military, I just don't find it realistic and fair for them. Children deserve freedom and fun, they shouldn't have to worry about when they are going to die. I was shocked that he put the wealthy into farms and forced them to work. Dictators take advantage of their power a lot more than we think!

Concentration camps were where Jews and other people went as a punishment. They were tortured and forced to work grueling hours. They were gassed, burned, and worked to death. I believe that Pol Pot, the dictator from the Cambodian Genocide, was probably the worst dictator in my opinion. I say this because he killed many people from his race because of what they believed in. He also moved the country people into the city and the city people into the country to see if that actually would make equality. When he saw this did not work, he killed or sentenced them because it was not what he pictured it. He also enslaved many people in Cambodia and he destroyed most of the capital which is known as Phnom Pehn. He was known as the Hitler of Cambodia. 1.7 million people were killed by this dictator and there were about 20,000 graveyards used for these bodies. This shows that that Pol Pot was probably the most dangerous dictator.:)

One of the worst dictators would be Mao Zedong. He had caused the deaths of 49-78 million people in China during his time of ruling. Most were the cause of starvation and the rest was cause of persecution or cause of enter “reform through labor” camps. During the five years of his dictator life, he had sent people into “reform through labor” camps. Mao also forced young intellectuals into leaving the country to become farmers and many died, the number of deaths varied depending on who you asked. He also asked his citizens to come forth and tell him what he should do to govern China. However, he decided to sentence many of them to death, around five-hundred thousand people, for being considered dangerous thinkers. Mao believed that chaos and destruction was to help China become better and he did not help his people when they went through times of great starvation.

I agree with Melita. I think that anyone who can kill millions of people without feeling guilty. I feel as though there are many people who are extremely prejudice against others but I don't think anyone has ever so prejudice that they would kill that many people just to have their way. I have never stumbled across a dictator so terrible as Hitler. He hated Jews so much, he was intent on wiping them from the face of the earth which is the most dishonorable thing anyone can do. I can't imagine being a Jew and having that kind of pressure on me. I have a feeling it would be completely terrifying and scarring to live during World War 2. Like most of the comments here, I believe Adolf Hitler was the most cruel dictator there is. Hitler is known for the Holocaust, which was the systematic killing of millions of Jews by the Nazi Party. He some how got many people to persecute Jews. Hitler did this because he believed they were the main enemies of Germany. Germans did not like the treaty because it blamed them for World War I. Most think that Hitler was only against Jews, but he was also against Gypsies. The Jews were taken of their citizenship, forbidden to use public facilities, and they were driven out of work. They were later rounded up and sent to concentration camps, which were prison camps for civilians who are considered enemies of the state. He treated the Jews like they were not human, basically because of their religion.

In my opinion, I would say that Rafael Trujillo was one of the worst dictators of all time. He ruled over the Dominican Republic for almost 30 years before he was assassinated on May 30, 1961. He did do some good to the country while he was still in power, which included decreasing the amount of foreign debt that the country owned and bringing economic prosperity to the people that lived in the country. Despite all this, he ignored the rural areas where the people's land was taken away for sugar plantations. He took control of most of the industries and buildings. He established a secret police force that killed and murdered people, quote on quote, "accidentally." He also practiced (was that used properly?) something, and I'm pretty sure we are all aware of this term, racism. During his ruling, he wanted there to be more fair skinned people in his country, and not "dark skinned." For this goal to be met. he killed about 20 thousand people that were not considered light skinned.

The Holocaust is an event that will never be forgotten in history. Millions of Jews were put through tragedies and events they shouldn't have gone through. Hitler had the power to kill millions and turn a population of people against Jews. He intended on washing out all Jews from Earth which really shows how much of a dictator he was. Hitler is the cause of a major change in the entire world. Because of him, we lost a vast majority of innocent people. Dictatorship should no longer exist in the world. We the people have the power to overthrow any ruler who participates in these kind of events. All it takes is confidence and strength..hopefully our generation can change this.

I would have to say Emperor Shōwa a.k.a Emperor Hirohito was a harsh ruler Japan. Shōwa played the role for Japan during WWII. He felt that Japanese loyalty was being threatened the more the U.S. showed hospitality to Japan Natives. Shōwa, being more concerned about space, encouraged all Japanese civilians to commit suicide rather than being arrested and put in prison. He even had a General "promise" the civilians a high place in the afterlife. There are many war crimes that can and are most likely related to Japan at that time, but Shōwa had enough power at the time to rewrite and erase history.

Hitler was a very ruthless, and bad/dangerous person. He is best known to be a very bad dictator for his actions, but that was because his actions were in fact, that bad. I believe he was the worst because, although many dictators have done many terrible things, I have never seen somebody just make people suffer and kill as many people as he did. This was more toward jews along with some other types of people, but he would in fact put these people in concentration camps in which they would do work and would suffer for the whole day just for being a kind of person he does not like. He gassed these people, often sent people from their army just to kill them, and would even put print on their skin so it showed that they were in fact jews. I have never really known a person who made people suffer like this to this extent, which is millions of people. I have never seen a person who instantly attacked directly at people like Adolf Hitler did. All these people were innocent, and did not deserve to be killed. Hitler obviously took his power to seriously and started taking major advantage of his power. Again many people were dictators and were very bad, but in my opinion, no one beats this beast of germany.

There are many, maybe even countless, dictators who have abused their power viciously. Some were worse than others but I believe Fidel Castro was in the high ranking of who abused their power the most. Castro didn't really have a problem with any country until he realized the United States was sending checks to pay for Cuban personal materials. Castro was more of a selfish ruler than anything. He wouldn't consider other peoples' thoughts, he did not hold free elections, and he sacked ministers and replaced them with people who were often young and inexperienced. Politicians who disagreed with him faced being arrested and considered as deviants, as were homosexuals who were often imprisoned. This is a big problem with Castro. He did what he wanted, no questions asked. The Cuban people weren't equal anymore. Homosexuals are still people and need to be considered as just a regular person, but Castro didn't care, so he just sent them to jail just because that person liked the same gender. Castro used his power to achieve many good things in Cuba including social welfare, universal education, almost guaranteed employment and quality health care. However his one- party state jailed those who opposed him, ruined the economy and led hundreds of thousands of Cubans to flee. This abuse of power has led to a government which controls every Cuban newspaper, television channel and radio station and restricts internet access. Castro used his power to avenge the torture and murder of hundreds of Cubans by the Batista government. He set up public tribunals where the people responsible were tried and executed. Whilst this pleased many Cubans, world opinion was divided and somewhat shocked, making him one of the worst dictators. This might not be as brutal to you all, but I still think a dictator who doesn't follow for equality, is still one of the worst to ever exist.

Although I would like to be able to change it up a little bit, my opinion remains the same. I believe that Adolf Hitler was the most ruthless dictator of this time period. He was a leader of the fascist movement, along with Benito Mussolini. He committed one of the largest genocides in human history, and we are lucky that some of the survivors are still alive today to tell the true harrowing tale. He rounded up the Jewish people, or in some cases he took people who just looked like they were Jewish. He took them to concentration camps and killed people in multiple gruesome ways. He separated family members and often they did not know who in the family were still alive. The people at the concentration camps would tell the Jewish people to go to the 'shower' room and get ready for the 'shower', when in reality they were gas chambers. He would kill them with carbon monoxide gas. Any man capable and fine with that is no longer sane in my opinion.

This is the “typical answer” to this question, but I believe the worst dictator was Adolf Hitler (although what do we really mean by “worst”? Who killed the most, who caused the most lasting damage, who reigned the longest? Not sure). During the Holocaust, 17 million (although some sources say 11) people were killed. The Nazi’s set up a powerful “superiority” system in Germany. Those who were at least 6 generations german, had blonde hair, blue eyes, were white, able bodied, and intelligent were considered to be the defining characteristics of the “Aryan race”, or the superior race of Nazi Germany. Those who were (or often simply had relations with) Jews, people of color, LGBT community members, mentally or physically disabled people, left wingers, communists, Roma, Slavs, Ukrainians, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Soviet Prisoners of War, and a great many other groups, were rapidly being oppressed more and more before full genocide broke out. First these people were shunned from society, it was too dangerous for them to go out on the streets without the constant fear of being brutally beaten or killed. Then they were sent to ghettos, little “villages” outside of everyday life where they were forced to live. They were kept trapped, sick, poor, and starving in these ghettos. Then they began to be moved into concentration camps. Very few made it out alive. Many died from being overworked in these intensive labor camps. Some were killed by illness, infection, or starvation. One would never know when they would wake up to find the person sleeping beside them dead. Most who were able to escape those fates were brutally murdered. The Germans, interested in doing things efficiently, had been testing the method of using gas to kill people in gas vans. Once this method was approved, people were being led into large rooms in execution camps where they were told they were about to take a “shower”. They had no idea what was about to happen when the gas was released. Many were also shot, the bodies thrown in deep pits or burned in giant ovens. Not only were people murdered, but many medical experiments were performed on human test subjects in concentration camps, often on young children One of the most infamous of these experimenters was Dr. Joseph Mendele, who would often personally escort young children to the gas chambers, luring them with toys and sweets. I found this quote in a wiki article: “I remember one set of twins in particular: Guido and Ina, aged about four. One day, Mengele took them away. When they returned, they were in a terrible state: they had been sewn together, back to back, like Siamese twins. Their wounds were infected and oozing pus. They screamed day and night. Then their parents—I remember the mother's name was Stella—managed to get some morphine and they killed the children in order to end their suffering.” I have also heard of many other stories in which parents would poison their children in order to spare them from suffering

I think that the most harshest/cruelest dictator was Pot Pol. He was the leader of a mass genocide in Cambodia famously known as the Khmer Rouge. Millions of people were killed for no real reason. Pot Pol tried to get rid of an entire social order and make everyone farmers. It was much like the Holocaust, giving him the nickname of "the Cambodian/Asian Hitler". During the Khmer Rouge, he said there was an American bombing and everyone needed to evacuate 3 kilometers from their city. Those that refused had their houses burned to ashes and were killed. This walk of 3 kilometers killed many children. When they finally got to their destination, they worked as farmers on labor camps. People worked for 12 hours a day non-stop and were severely punished if caught taking a break. Sound familiar? Yep. He is just another Hitler. Remember that question Mr. Husband ask at the beginning of the school year? "Why do we learn/teach history?" and then almost everyone answered to prevent things from happening again? Remember what he told us? History is doomed to repeat itself no matter what.

I believe that the most brutal dictator there is is Kim Jong Un. As of now he is still leading North Korea and leading it in the worst way possible. In North Korea you can get publicly executed for simply just watching a movie made here in the U.S. In North Korea there are many concentration camps the they use to torture people by throwing boiling water at them, whipping them, or having animals attack them. But he doesn't like being known for that so he has his people cover up what he's done by throwing a celebration or coming up with some kind of distraction for his people. Yet he doesn't help them out with what they really need. Instead of giving them food or other necessities he rather throw celebrations when really they don't need that. Many people have committed suicide and North Korea is known for being one of the most suicidal regions on all of the world.

I too, for one, agree that Adolf Hitler is the most ruthless dictators. He had this belief that the cause of Germany's troubles was the Jewish people. Therefore, he went out and sought out all of the Jews in the world. He captured them and made them work to death or just kill them on the spot. I honestly think that he was so fixated on the Jews he didn't have time to blame himself and the other German folk.

I don't know many dictators, but of those that I do know, I think that Adolf Hitler was the most ruthless. He caused to many innocent people to die because he didn't agree with their choices of religion. He also cause many other problems for Germany.
